Quick Answer

What is Tondela?

Tondela is a genuine engineered hardwood floor in a medium brown tone, with moderate knots and natural grain variation for a robust, characterful finish.

Is it waterproof?

Engineered wood is not waterproof. Its layered core is designed to be more stable than solid hardwood in humid or below-grade spaces, subject to the manufacturer's moisture-testing and installation requirements, yet the wood surface can still be harmed by standing water, so treat it as water-resistant and clean spills quickly.

Can it be refinished?

How many times it can be refinished comes down to the real-wood veneer on top. With its 2mm layer, this floor is thin enough that a buff-and-recoat or a deep clean is usually the better first move; a light professional sanding may be possible, but a flooring professional should inspect the veneer first.

What does the plank surface look like?

Up close, Tondela's birch veneer runs a fine, straight grain for most of each board's length, then breaks into an occasional cathedral arch or a soft flame figure where the grain shifts direction — natural movement, not a repeat. The board photographed here carries real character: an open knot with a dark center, a hairline check trailing off a smaller knot, and a small pin knot further down the plank. That tracks with the Clear-to-Character grade range Tondela ships in — expect some boards cleaner than this one and some more marked, plank to plank, the way a genuine hardwood floor varies.

Will this color work in my room?

Tondela's warm amber-brown reads inviting in most rooms — it doesn't skew cool or gray, so it works with warm wood-tone furniture, brass or matte-black hardware, and creamy or greige walls alike. In a north-facing or lower-light room the tone deepens slightly toward the amber end; in strong daylight it lightens and the fine straight grain shows through more clearly. It's a warm mid-tone that's easy to live with day to day, not a bold color statement.

Overview

Tondela's grade run spans Clear through Character (A through E), so the boards in a single carton range from clean and even to genuinely marked — that's graded variation, not a defect. The board pictured here sits toward the character end of that range, showing real, natural marking a single-grade, all-clear floor won't give you. Undertone leans warm amber over a medium brown base, which keeps Tondela at home in a kitchen, a hallway, or an open living space where you want the floor to read as real wood rather than a repeated pattern. Ideal for someone who wants that grade-driven mix of clean and marked boards, rather than a floor sorted to look identical carton to carton.

Graded Clear to Character, so the character in this board is real, not repeated.

Frequently asked questions

Will it match my cabinets?
Tondela's warm medium brown pairs cleanly with white, cream, or light gray cabinets, where the contrast lets the floor's amber undertone stand out. It also works with wood-tone cabinets in a similar warm range — pick a cabinet finish a shade lighter or darker than the floor rather than matching it exactly, so the two don't blend into one flat surface. It's less suited to cool-gray or charcoal cabinetry, which can fight the floor's warmth rather than complement it.
