Quick Answer
What is Rio Espresso?
Rio Espresso is a real-wood engineered hardwood floor in a rich dark brown tone, with moderate knots, visible grain, and natural color variation for an authentic hardwood feel.
Is it waterproof?
No — don't count on engineered wood as a waterproof floor. It's a more moisture-stable choice than solid hardwood and is often approved for concrete or below-grade installs where the manufacturer permits it, but the wood surface means water-resistant is the accurate description, not waterproof.
Can it be refinished?
Two different things: a light, compatible recoat can often refresh the finish without touching the veneer at all, while a full sanding is limited by the real wood on top. With a 3mm veneer, this floor leaves enough real wood on top for a professional refinish when the time comes. A buff-and-recoat or a deep clean covers most day-to-day wear in the meantime — keep the deeper sand-down in reserve, and have a flooring professional confirm the veneer depth first.
What does the plank surface look like?
Up close, the straight-to-cathedral grain runs long and even across most boards, broken by a bold, swirling knot cluster on one plank and a smaller pin knot on another. Ribbon-stripe figure adds a subtle shimmer as the light angle changes down the row, keeping the surface from reading flat or repetitive. Because it's a real wood veneer rather than a printed surface, that mix of grain and knotting is naturally unique from plank to plank — no two boards match exactly.
Will this color work in my room?
Rio Espresso's dark brown base carries a visible red warmth rather than a flat, cool cast, so it typically doesn't read as plain black, even in a dim corner. In brighter, sun-filled rooms that red undertone comes forward and warms the space; in softer or indirect light it deepens into a quieter espresso tone. It sits well against cream, soft white, and warm greige walls, and pairs naturally with brass or bronze hardware rather than cool chrome finishes.

Overview
Rio Espresso carries a rich dark brown base with a distinct red warmth running through it, rather than the flatter, cooler cast some dark-brown floors settle into. The grain runs straight for long stretches with an occasional cathedral sweep, and this particular floor shows real board-to-board character rather than a uniform repeat. Built as an engineered hardwood in the African Mahogany Sapele collection — a real wood veneer over an engineered core — it suits floating, staple/nail-down, or glue-down installation and works well in living rooms, dining rooms, and other everyday spaces where you want a grounded, warm dark floor rather than a stark black one. Best suited to someone who wants that visible red warmth in a dark floor — if you're after a different depth of dark brown, this family includes other shades worth comparing in person.
A dark brown that leans red, not flat or cold — with real board-to-board character built in.
