Yes. The 6.5mm core is the SPC industry’s mainstream residential thickness — what most family-tier waterproof flooring uses. The thing that drives durability isn’t core thickness, it’s the wear layer (the clear protective top layer that takes pet claws and dragged furniture). Vellichor Gemstone ships with a 20-mil commercial-grade wear layer, which is the same wear layer used on premium residential and light commercial flooring. The total under-plank assembly with the 1.5mm IXPE pad is 8mm — the pad adds underfoot softness that bare 6.5mm doesn’t have on its own.

What does VibranCore SPC mean?

VibranCore is Vellichor’s proprietary trade name for their SPC (Solid Polymer Core) composition — the rigid stone-polymer composite at the heart of every Vellichor plank. Functionally it’s the same SPC technology used across the waterproof vinyl plank category: limestone powder bonded with PVC and stabilizers, calendered into a rigid sheet, then topped with the printed décor layer and wear layer. What “VibranCore” specifies is Vellichor’s particular composition ratio and dimensional stability tolerances — calibrated for the 30-degree temperature swings common in Bay Area homes (foggy mornings to warm afternoons) without warping or seam separation.

Can Gemstone be installed in a basement?

Yes. All three Vellichor tiers (including Gemstone) are approved for above-grade, on-grade, and below-grade installation. The 100% waterproof VibranCore core means basement humidity won’t cause the planks to warp, swell, or develop seam gaps the way laminate or solid wood would. Is Gemstone harder to install than Summit?
