Vellichor Summit Collection — 8.5mm Waterproof SPC

The Summit Collection is the flagship of the Vellichor line — an 8.5mm VibranCore SPC plank with 1.5mm IXPE pre-attached pad totaling 10mm of under-plank assembly, the thickest construction Vellichor makes. Nine mountain-named colors anchor this collection (Blackburn, Denali, K2, Neacola, Ossa, Rainier, Shasta, Shasta Herringbone, Torbert) including the line’s only herringbone variant. Summit’s thicker SPC core hides minor subfloor imperfections better than thinner tiers, delivers premium underfoot density, and is built for the rooms where the floor is part of the design statement — primary living spaces, master suites, and high-end remodels where underfoot density matters as much as waterproof performance.

9 colors in this collection (8 standard plank + 1 herringbone variant). All Vellichor products are 100% waterproof, FloorScore certified, Greenguard Gold certified, Zero Formaldehyde, CARB Phase II compliant, and backed by a Lifetime Residential / 12-Year Light Commercial warranty.

How this tier compares to the rest of the Vellichor line

The Gemstone Collection (6.5mm SPC) and Galaxy Collection (7.5mm SPC) both deliver the same VibranCore waterproof performance and identical certification profile, just at thinner plank constructions. The Summit Collection steps up to 8.5mm core thickness — the thickest VibranCore plank Vellichor makes — and is the only Vellichor tier with a herringbone variant (Shasta Herringbone, VC-709H). Three reasons to choose Summit over the lower tiers: subfloor conditions that benefit from a thicker plank hiding minor low spots, primary living spaces where underfoot density is part of what the floor is meant to deliver, and projects that specifically want a herringbone pattern. The functional waterproof performance and certifications are identical across all three tiers — what Summit pricing buys is rigidity, underfoot feel, and the herringbone option.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 8.5mm thickness actually deliver vs. 7.5mm Galaxy?
Two practical differences. First, subfloor tolerance — the extra millimeter of SPC core hides minor low spots and unevenness better than 7.5mm. Older Bay Area homes (1960s-1980s) often have subfloors that telegraph through thinner planks; 8.5mm masks that variation more reliably. Second, underfoot density — thicker SPC feels closer to engineered hardwood when you walk on it, less hollow than thinner LVT or laminate. The waterproof performance, wear-layer thickness, and certifications are identical to Galaxy and Gemstone; what you’re paying for is rigidity and the herringbone option, not waterproof performance.
How is the Shasta Herringbone variant different from standard Summit planks?
Shasta Herringbone (VC-709H) is the only herringbone variant in the entire Vellichor line. Mechanically it shares the same VibranCore SPC core, the same 20-mil wear layer, the same 1.5mm IXPE pad, and the same Lifetime Residential warranty as the standard Summit planks. The difference is dimensional: herringbone ships in shorter R/L panel format (left and right hand pieces) designed to interlock at 90-degree angles for the herringbone pattern, where standard Summit ships in 9-inch by 60-inch straight-lay planks. Herringbone also requires longer acclimation per the manufacturer install guide, plus a flatter subfloor than straight-lay because of the directional locking.
Is Summit harder to install than the lower tiers?
Standard Summit planks use the same angle-tap drop-down click system (Uniclic-style 5G) as Gemstone and Galaxy, so the click mechanics are identical and standard Summit installs the same as the thinner tiers. Shasta Herringbone is a different story — herringbone patterns require directional plank orientation, more cuts at room boundaries, and tighter subfloor flatness tolerances than straight-lay. Most homeowners can DIY straight-lay Summit; herringbone is where most customers prefer to bring in a licensed installer. Kapriz can refer a C-15 contractor experienced with SPC herringbone installations.
Can Summit be installed over radiant heat?
Yes, with limits. Summit is compatible with hydronic radiant heat systems only — electric heating mats are not approved. Maximum permitted floor surface temperature is 81°F (27°C). Use an in-floor temperature sensor. New concrete or gypcrete subfloors must cure for a minimum of four weeks before operating the radiant system. Damage from radiant heat exceeding spec is not covered under warranty. The 8.5mm core thickness doesn’t change radiant compatibility relative to the thinner Vellichor tiers — the same hydronic-only and 81°F-max limits apply across the entire line.
Can I see Summit in person before ordering?
Yes. Kapriz keeps Summit Collection samples on display at the Santa Clara showroom (891 Laurelwood Rd, Suite 101), including the Shasta Herringbone variant when available. Call (408) 753-3220 ahead to confirm which specific colors are physically on hand — we don’t permanently stock every color across the Vellichor line, and a quick call saves a wasted trip if the color you want needs to be ordered in for review. For premium-tier purchases, in-person sample review before committing to a project is especially worthwhile — color matching from photographs alone misses the underfoot feel and texture that drives a lot of Summit’s premium positioning.
