How durable is it, and what traffic can it take?
The surface is topped by a 20 mil wear layer — which works out to 0.51 mm — designed for heavy residential use and many light-commercial applications, with excellent protection against everyday scratches, scuffs, and abrasion. That's a step above the standard-duty wear layers.
Will it hold up to daily life?
Office chair wheels, spike-heel point loads, and dragged furniture all concentrate force. Protect Gray Oak's 20 mil wear layer with soft casters (Type W or U), a chair mat in high-use areas, and felt pads under furniture legs — the manufacturer's recommended precautions for keeping a rigid SPC core dent-free.
What does the plank surface look like?
Up close, Gray Oak shows open flowing grain with long cathedral arches that sweep the length of each board. Fine fissures split along the grain and medium knots with dark centers scatter at a moderate spacing, adding natural character without a heavy rustic look. Gentle figure variation from board to board keeps the printed wood-look surface from ever looking stamped.
Quiet enough upstairs or in a condo?
The 1.5mm Bioguardian anti-bacterial EVA acoustic layer damps the hollow "click" sound characteristic of floating floors. Gray Oak is quieter underfoot than LVT with a loose pad — both for the walker and for rooms below in multi-story homes.
